Mar 24, 2011· Sevastopol started as a settlement south of Des Moines around 1855. It was laid out by James Sherman, was recorded on July 21, 1862, and incorporated in 1877 or 1878 (varies with source). Its boundaries were SE 5th, Hartford Ave, Bell Avenue and Pioneer Park. It is said to have been named by John Webber.
By the early 1900s, coal was discovered in Des Moines Township east of Woodward, leading to the creation of the Scandia and Phildia mining settlements. After the Phildia mine was abandoned in 1915 and the Scandia mine closed in 1921, miners moved on to the Moran mine.
The coal mines had closed by the end of the 1940s while streetcar service ended in 1951. In 1920, shortly after the city incorporated, Urbandale had 298 people. Its population in 1950 was 1,777, but the city grew rapidly after that along with the rest of Des Moines'' suburbs. By 1970 Urbandale had 14,434 people, and in 2000 it had 29,072.

This 1880searly 1900s coalmining center was along the Wabash Railroad three miles northwest of Red Rock, on the north side of the Des Moines River, 13 miles west of Red Rock Dam. Drowned by the Red Rock Reservoir in 1969. Some of the mines included the Black Diamond, Findley and Success mines.

By 1867, there were small drift mines all along Muchakinock Creek down to Eddyville where the creek flows into the Des Moines River.
